With the Fourth of July about a month away, organizers are scrambling to raise enough money for the annual fireworks display.

The fundraising campaign began with Fremont County Democrat Frank Smith and Master Printers each donating $100 while Environmental Alternatives donated $500. Fremont County Fireworks Committee Chairman Hank Holloway said the committee needed a minimum of $3,000 for this year’s display.

“Last year, 47 percent of the fireworks were used,” he said. “We need to replace the other half and pay the insurance (to shoot them.)”

In order to raise the needed funds, Holloway said everyone who donates $100 or more would get their pictures in the newspaper.

“I’ll come to their house to take their picture if they want me to do that,” he said.

Sponsored by the Fremont County Fireworks Committee, Cañon City Daily Record and the Fremont Campus of Pueblo Community College, the event will feature games, entertainment, food and free watermelon, beginning at 6 p.m. July 4 at 51320 U.S. 50.

During the event, Applewood will play a mixture of country, oldies and classic rock and roll music, followed by Coopersonics performing their own brand of music. At about 9 p.m., the fireworks will be launched from Skyline Drive.

And the children will have plenty to do with the bounce house and inflatables on site.
